Long Division Calculator with Steps (Remainders & Decimals)
Divide any numbers and see the full long division worked out like in a notebook: every subtraction, every digit brought down, with a remainder or with decimals.

How to do long division step by step
- Divide: take the first digits of the dividend until the number is at least as large as the divisor, and see how many times the divisor fits.
- Multiply: multiply that quotient digit by the divisor.
- Subtract: subtract the product from the digits you took.
- Bring down the next digit and repeat.
- Finish: keep the remainder, or add a decimal point and zeros to keep dividing.
Long division examples
6754 ÷ 48 (two-digit divisor)
67 ÷ 48 = 1, 67 − 48 = 19. Bring down 5 → 195 ÷ 48 = 4, 195 − 192 = 3. Bring down 4 → 34 is less than 48 → 0. Quotient 140, remainder 34. Check: 140 × 48 + 34 = 6754 ✔
4224 ÷ 21 (zero in the quotient)
42 ÷ 21 = 2. Bring down 2 → 2 is less than 21, so write 0. Bring down 4 → 24 ÷ 21 = 1, remainder 3. Answer: 201 R3.
12.5 ÷ 0.25 (decimal divisor)
The divisor has 2 decimal places, so multiply both numbers by 100: 1250 ÷ 25 = 50.
7 ÷ 3 (repeating decimal)
7 ÷ 3 = 2 R1. Add a decimal point and a zero: 10 ÷ 3 = 3 R1, again and again → 2.3333…
Long division with decimals
The rule is simple: the divisor must be a whole number. If it has decimals, move the decimal point to the right in both numbers by the same number of places, adding zeros to the dividend if needed. Then divide as usual and place the decimal point in the quotient when you bring down the first decimal digit.

Frequently asked questions
How do you do long division step by step?
Divide, multiply, subtract and bring down the next digit, then repeat until no digits are left. What is left is the remainder.
How do I divide by a decimal?
Move the decimal point of the divisor to the right until it is a whole number, move it the same number of places in the dividend, then divide normally.
How do I check a long division answer?
Multiply the quotient by the divisor and add the remainder. You should get the dividend.
Can it show the answer with a remainder?
Yes. Choose “With remainder” to get the whole-number quotient and remainder, or “With decimals” for a decimal answer.
Is this calculator free?
Yes, it is free, needs no sign-up and works on phones.
